You’ve probably heard of chamomile tea, and there’s a reason it’s often a go-to drink before bed. This is a huge game changer for gut health because, believe it or not, stress and anxiety have a huge impact on your gut. That’s the reasons you may feel “butterflies” in your stomach when you’re nervous! When the nervous system is dysregulated, gut symptoms can flare. After all, they do call the gut the second brain!

Slippery Elm coats the lining of the gut, helping protect it from irritation and inflammation. Not only does it coat the lining of the gut, but it even strengthens the mucosal layer of the intestines, which is essential for preventing leaky gut and protecting your body from harmful bacteria.
I recommend using the powder form, because when you mix it with water, it becomes a thick, gel-like substance known as mucilaginous. This is what provides the soothing and healing benefits.
If texture isn’t your thing, slippery elm is also available in a liquid form.

4. Aloe Vera Juice
I’m sure we’ve all used aloe vera when we’ve had a bad sunburn, and for good reason! Aloe is a natural healer. It’s full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain, irritation, and inflammation, and not to mention, it’s hydrating!
Those same properties make aloe vera juice helpful for digestive health. It can soothe the GI tract and ease discomfort that stems from gut related issues such as IBS, heartburn, or GERD.
I’ve tried a few brands of Aloe Vera Juice. You can often find it at your local grocery store. Just make sure the ingredients are clean and natural. Avoid the ones with all the extra additives or added sugars. I personally love Lily of the Desert’s whole leaf option. It’s non-GMO and gluten free.
5. Probiotic
Now, I have to say, probiotics have received a lot of attention in the past few years, and while I think they are great for some people, they may not be right for everyone.
Probiotics are live bacteria that support the gut microbiome. They have many great benefits, however, taking the wrong strain, or taking them when you don’t need them can sometimes do more harm than good.
When it comes to taking a probiotic, I believe it’s very important to consult your doctor and avoid using generic brands that are on the shelves of every convenience store – those can be hard to actually know what you’re actually getting. Every probiotic is different, and what works for one person may not work for you.
Ps.. if starting a probiotic supplement feels overwhelming, you can get some probiotics from foods such as yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, or even some aged cheeses.
