Lately, have you ever felt like you try to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and still feel like something is just…off balance?

When people think about wellness, they usually picture eating healthy and working out. I used to think that was the whole picture, too. While those things are super important for your health, there are SO many other factors that influence your overall well-being.

So, while it’s important to continue to eat healthy and move your body, real wellness is a little more layered than that and more multi-dimensional than it seems. Different areas of our lives affect how we feel mentally, physically, and emotionally. And when one area is out of sync, it can throw everything else off.

Enter the 7 Dimensions of Wellness! This wellness model is basically a way of looking at health more holistically and recognizing that a lot of different parts of life can affect how we feel day to day.

If you’re someone who’s been wanting to improve their overall wellness, then read on to learn about the 7 Dimensions of Wellness and habits you can start implementing each day to feel truly well!

What Are the 7 Dimensions of Wellness

Alright, let’s get into it! What are the 7 Dimensions of Wellness? I’m so glad you asked!

Each dimension focuses on a different area of your life that can impact how you feel overall. When these areas feel more balanced, you’ll usually notice you have more energy and just feel better overall. The dimensions are:

  • Physical Wellness
  • Emotional Wellness
  • Social Wellness
  • Intellectual Wellness
  • Spiritual Wellness
  • Occupational/Financial Wellness
  • Environmental Wellness

Let’s explore what each dimension means and simple habits you can start incorporating into your daily life to support them.

physical wellness

Physical Wellness

Let’s start with physical wellness, since it’s usually the first thing people think about when they hear the word “health.” Honestly, it’s also where most people begin because it’s the most visible. Physical wellness is really about taking care of your body through everyday habits that support your health and energy. This usually looks like eating balanced meals, staying active, getting enough sleep, and making sure you’re staying hydrated. When you’re consistent with those things, you’ll usually notice you have more energy and just feel better overall.

I can always tell when I’ve been off in this area because my energy drops fast… and my motivation drops even faster.

Habits To Support Physical Wellness
  • Eating balanced, nutrient-dense foods
  • Moving your body regularly, whether that’s yoga, lifting, or daily walks
  • Prioritizing consistent sleep each night (7-9 hours is the recommended amount for most adults)
  • Staying hydrated throughout the day
  • Allowing your body time to rest & recover

Some people find tools like a walking pad helpful for sneaking in extra steps while working or watching TV. A walking pad is a great way to get moving without having to leave the house!

Emotional Wellness

Next up is emotional wellness. This is basically how we handle the rollercoaster of life without losing our minds! Life throws a lot at us, and figuring out how to process emotions in a healthy way makes a big difference.

I personally love doing small habits that give me a mental reset, such as journaling, meditating, saying affirmations, or taking a few deep breaths in the middle of a stressful day. Even stepping away from social media when you’re feeling overwhelmed can make a HUGE difference.

Habits To Support Emotional Wellness
  • Practice mindfulness or meditation
  • Journal your thoughts and feelings
  • Set healthy boundaries with people in your life
  • Take short breaks from screens and social media when needed
  • Do something that makes you genuinely relax (drink some tea, read a book, listen to music or a podcast, or go on a walk)

Journaling is one of my personal favorite ways to cope! If journaling is new for you, a guided journal like The Gratitude Journal or The Five Minute Journal can help you get started and make it fun rather than intimidating.

Social Wellness

It’s no secret that we as humans are social beings. The relationships and social interactions we have throughout our life shape our overall happiness and feelings of connectedness and support.

But let’s be real, life gets busy, and it’s easy for those connections to slip through the cracks. Does the classic “we should totally get together soon, I miss you!” text sound familiar… only for months to go by without actually making plans? I’ve definitely been guilty of this more times than I can count.

It’s easy to underestimate this, but our relationships shape more of our lives than we think, and can actually contribute to our physical health as well as our mental health.

Research from organizations like the American Fitness Professionals & Associates and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that social isolation and chronic loneliness can place stress on not only the mind, but also the body, and can increase the risk of several health problems, such as heart disease and stroke. That’s why making time for real connection and supportive relationships can make a huge difference in overall well-being.

Habits To Support Social Wellness
  • Spend intentional time with friends or family when you can
  • Send a quick text or call someone just to check in and let them know you’re thinking of them
  • Surround yourself with people who genuinely support and encourage you
  • Practice open and honest communication
  • Get involved in something in your community, whether that’s a class, club, or volunteer opportunity
  • Plan small activities with friends, like grabbing lunch, coffee, or going on a walk

Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual wellness is basically about keeping your brain active and a little curious. When you try new things or learn something different, it naturally exposes you to new ideas and ways of thinking. The wellness model reminds us that keeping your mind active matters just as much as staying physically active.

The good news is, this one is usually easier than people expect! Things like reading a book or learning a new skill can keep your mind active and inspired.

Habits To Support Intellectual Wellness
  • Read a book you love
  • Listen to podcasts or educational content
  • Try a new hobby or creative activity
  • Challenge yourself with puzzles or problem-solving activities

If you’re looking for a good personal development book to start with, Atomic Habits by James Clear is one of my personal favorites!

Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness can look really different depending on the person, and there’s not really one “right” way to do it. For some people it’s religion, but for others it might be meditation, nature, reflection, or anything that helps them feel connected to their values and purpose.

Habits To Support Spiritual Wellness
  • Practicing meditation/mindfulness
  • Spending time in nature
  • Reflecting on your personal values
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Creating quiet time for reflection
  • Practicing prayer

Occupational/Financial Wellness

Work and finances are a big part of everyday life, so it makes sense that they affect our overall wellness too.

When work feels stressful or finances feel out of control, it can easily spill into the rest of your life. On the flip side, even a little stability here can make everyday life feel a lot less overwhelming.

Occupational and financial wellness aren’t about having a perfect job with no stressful days or making a certain amount of money. It’s more about feeling an overall sense of balance in your work life and developing healthier habits with your finances that make you feel fulfilled and secure. To be honest… most of us are figuring this out as we go.

Habits To Support Occupational/Financial Wellness
  • Setting goals for your career
  • Creating healthy boundaries between work and personal time
  • Developing new professional skills
  • Budgeting/tracking expenses
  • Taking breaks to avoid burnout
  • Working a job that feels meaningful to you

Environmental Wellness

The environment you spend time in can affect your mood more than you might realize. When your space feels calm, clean, and comfortable, it can make a big difference in how you feel day to day. I didn’t really notice this until I started cleaning up my space a bit. It’s also one of those areas people don’t always think about when it comes to wellness, even though it plays a bigger role than you’d expect.

Habits To Support Environmental Wellness
  • Keeping your home clean and organized
  • Decluttering areas that feel overwhelming
  • Spending time outdoors in nature
  • Choosing products that reduce unnecessary toxins
  • Creating a calm and comfortable home environment

One small change I’ve made to my environment is switching out toxic products for cleaner options. I love lighting candles, but many of them can be toxic, so one non-toxic candle brand I’ve switched to and love, is Snif. Their candles smell so good and they have a lot of seasonal scents to choose from! One of my favorites is Birds & The Breeze for a fresh, clean scent!

Wellness is about way more than just what you eat or how often you exercise. All of these 7 areas play a role in how we feel day to day, even if we don’t always notice it.

You don’t have to work on everything at once. Start small and focus on one or two dimensions from above that feel most important right now, and slowly build habits that help you feel more balanced over time. You got this!
